5 Pieces I Can’t Wait to Wear This Fall, Inspired by Dior’s Pre-Fall 2024

On April 15, 2024, Maria Grazia Chiuri presented Dior’s Pre-Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection at the Brooklyn Museum, marking her inaugural runway show in New York. This event continued Dior’s historic connection to the city, a relationship initiated by Christian Dior himself when he opened a pioneering luxury ready-to-wear boutique at the corner of 5th Avenue and 57th Street in November 1948.

For this collection, Chiuri explored Dior’s archives, drawing inspiration from the brand’s early days in America, where it adapted to the casual, sporty lifestyle without losing its Parisian roots. The result is a collection that balances masculine with feminine, Parisian elegance with New York’s practical wearability, designed for a modern audience while staying true to Dior’s heritage.

In this collection, traditional Dior silhouettes are reimagined with American sportswear influences. Think black leggings, sportswear jerseys with a U.S. flag print, denim jackets, cuffed denim that reveal the Dior monogram, and sporty anoraks. Chiuri also incorporated New York-inspired elements, with the city’s skyline and landmarks decorating trench coats and book totes. The collection also paid tribute to American icons like Amelia Earhart with pieces including a leather aviator jacket paired with tweed, and Marlene Dietrich, whose androgynous style inspired the tailored suits and retro hair and makeup. The 1930s influence was reinterpreted in modern forms, such as cropped waistcoats paired with shirts and ties, tweed, and menswear-inspired shapes accentuated at the waist, along with contemporary touches like paperboy caps, sheer tea dresses, and skirt suits. One beautiful ensemble (see the photo below) featured a top hat, white waistcoat, and black tails, reminiscent of Marlene Dietrich in the iconic nightclub scene from Morocco (1930).

I absolutely love this collection! The androgynous looks, inspired by Marlene Dietrich, resonate deeply with my appreciation for Chiuri’s style, which emphasizes versatility in wardrobes and the ability to mix and match pieces in fresh, adaptable ways. It’s incredibly chic and functional, embodying a modern, feminist spirit. In today’s post, I’m excited to share with you my favorite looks from this collection and pieces that I cannot wait to incorporate into my fall wardrobe. I hope many brands will draw inspiration from this collection for their upcoming fall creations ;).

1. A Lady Jacket Embroidered With Pearls

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with lady jackets, such as this J.Crew lady jacket, and tweed jackets, like this beautiful Sandro tweed jacket that’s currently on my wishlist—I hope to purchase it soon. I find these jackets to be the perfect outerwear for transitional seasons like spring and autumn, and they’re an excellent alternative for days when a blazer feels too formal. Above, the model is wearing a stunning Dior jacket embroidered with pearls and sequins. If you’re looking for something in a similar style, consider this or this chic Sandro cropped tweed jacket.

2. High-rise Wide-leg Pants

I love wearing these wide-leg pants as they offer a great alternative to jeans when I want to look a bit more formal yet remain comfortable. I purchased these Sbiru wool-twill wide-leg pants from the Parisian brand Loulou Studio, which I enjoy wearing as often as possible. I had them tailored to fall perfectly over my loafers. You can find similar options at brands like The Frankie Shop or The Row.

3. A White Cropped Waistcoat with a Shirt

I adore this Dior ensemble featuring a white cropped waistcoat layered over a classic white shirt. This styling offers a chic, fresh way to wear a waistcoat. If you don’t yet have one in your wardrobe, consider this Massimo Dutti suit waistcoat. To steer clear of the café waiter look ;), pair it with a mini or midi skirt and heels. This outfit is perfect for any special occasion this fall or winter.

4. A Sparkly Midi Skirt with a Cozy Knit

This sparkly Dior skirt reminds me of the Isabel Marant Lupita crystal-embellished tulle top from the Fall/Winter 2022 ready-to-wear collection. I love the chic-décontracté (smart-casual) vibe of this look! It’s a fantastic source of inspiration for any end-of-the-year celebrations you might have planned.

5. An Oversized Grey Tweed Coat

I’m expecting to see a lot more tweed this fall and winter, and I’m thrilled about it! The Dior Pre-Fall 2024 collection featured an abundance of tweed, including grey tweed pants, coats, suits, jackets, and skirts. It reminds me of a similar outfit I had ten years ago—a long tweed coat paired with wide-leg tweed pants. This just goes to show that fashion is indeed cyclical, and I regret giving away that coat and pants. It also highlights the importance of investing in timeless pieces that can be cherished and retained over time. While I haven’t yet found a good alternative that matches Dior’s style, I’m hopeful that more affordable brands will launch similar options next fall.

Et voilà! I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post and that it has inspired your fashion choices for the upcoming season. If you have any questions or need further style advice, please feel free to leave a comment below!
