Today I’m revealing my everyday French makeup look which is a very natural, minimal makeup look. For this look, the face shouldn’t be over-sculpted or too transformative. Here is my makeup tutorial on a natural, simple, everyday French makeup look you can wear anywhere, anytime.
If you want to go a little bolder, choose to focus on one feature; whether it’s red lipstick or smudgy eyeliner. Keep everything else very minimal for a high impact.
5 Tips to Get That French Makeup Look
1. Diet is key to get glowing skin
Since I’ve changed my diet (among eating less sugar and dairy products), my skin has never been so healthy and glowy. Food plays a very important role in beauty and is a huge contributor to the overall health of your skin. Skin is a mirror to your state of health and if your skin is breaking out, looks dull or dry, look at your diet first, then adapt your skincare routine.
Again, it doesn’t matter how effective your beauty products are if you don’t have a healthy diet. A good beauty routine isn’t the be all and end all, but combining it with a balanced diet is essential in having good and clear skin. In this article, I’ve compiled a list of bad food habits which ruin your beauty efforts and healthy foods to eat to clear and prevent acne. After all, naturally healthy and glowy skin will require fewer skin care products and thus, fewer makeup products as well.
2. French girl makeup starts with skincare
Despite this article being a tutorial on getting that French everyday makeup look, the truth is, French women, don’t rely heavily on makeup. Instead, French girl makeup starts with a good skincare routine to keep their skin naturally gorgeous and glowing. The French like to enhance their natural features, starting with skin.
Before you go to bed, use a gentle cleanser like Bioderma’s Micellar Water. Once a week, use a clay mask like the La Roche Posay Sebo-Controlling mask in order to gently remove excess sebum without over-drying or causing inflammation. Use an under-eye treatment like the Nuxe Prodigieux Anti-Fatigue Eye Cream to hydrate, revive and fight against signs of aging. Finally, use a facial moisturizer -the holy grail skincare product- according to your skin type.
3. Skip foundation
For an everyday makeup look, French women usually don’t use foundation. Instead, they will prefer using a concealer where necessary (under the eyes, around the nose, on blemishes). I’m using Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer which is the perfect lightweight concealer that hydrates and blurs all imperfections.
If you need a little bit of coverage, treat your face to a tinted moisturizer or a BB, CC cream. From SPF infusions to nourishing BB creams, these second-skin formulas are perfect to even out your skin tone and blurs imperfections with a natural finish. For my everyday French makeup look, I’m using Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer which is a sheer coverage multi-tasker for a healthy, no-makeup look with a natural dewy finish. I applied it with my fingers, it’s very light and perfect for faking a bare face. Try to prefer cream-based products over powders for a natural finish.
4. Use a mix of blush and bronzer
Looking a little flushed is a signature part of the French everyday makeup look. However, whatever blush or bronzing powder you’re using, it needs to stay fresh, subtle and natural. Indeed, Kardashian-level contouring doesn’t exist in France. For the French, contouring can look too transformative and over-done.
Instead, a touch of pink or apricot on the apple of the cheek brighten up the face and accentuates the natural glow. I’ll recommend using cream blushes which are the best for that natural finish and the easiest to apply. I like using the lipstick Tom Ford Lip Color in shade 98 Federico that I apply on my cheeks like a cream blush. Or I like the RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in the shade
Then, I apply with a kabuki brush a bronzing powder from the forehead to the cheekbones and then from the cheekbones to the chin and also on the bridge of my nose. I like to use the Guerlain Terracotta Light in Light Warm 01 to give a natural healthy sun-kissed look to the face.
5. Keep brows, eyes
and lips natural
French girls usually keep their brows full, boyish and never overly filled in. To acheive this look, I’m using Benefit’s Gimme Brow or Glossier’s Boy
For the eyes, I love using Laura Mercier’s Caviar Sticks. It’s so easy to apply; I’m just using my fingers to dab some color on my eyes. My favorite colors are Metallic Taupe, Moonlight, Rose Gold, and Sugarfrost. There are all nude colors perfect for a natural makeup look. Finally, I just apply a layer of mascara; I’m using L’Oreal’s Million Lashes or Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara. And voila!
