How to Wear Your Loafers the Parisian Way

I have always loved loafers, even before this style of shoe became trendy a few years ago, and I will always adore them—even when they’re out of fashion! I believe they are the ultimate comfortable and chic flat shoes, easily worn in place of our good old sneakers, which sometimes, I find, lack elegance. They’re also the perfect shoes to wear in mid-season, like now, paired with pretty black or white socks or knee-highs. Whether worn with trousers, jeans (preferably straight or wide-leg jeans for a more modern look), a skirt, or even a short dress, loafers add that effortless touch of typically Parisian chic that we love so much!

So, in today’s article, having become an expert on loafers over the years and after reviewing dozens (perhaps hundreds?) of styles, I’m offering you a selection of the chicest loafers I’ve spotted this season. I hope this little selection will please you! Also, I’ve created four looks that I hope will inspire you to make the most of the loafers you may already have in your wardrobe.

Here is a selection of the most beautiful loafers I’ve spotted this season:

  1. Miu Miu logo-plaque patent-leather loafers
  2. Maje Clover-detail leather loafers
  3. Rosaé Paris Les Valentins
  4. Tod’s Fringed glossed-leather brogues or Embellished patent-leather brogues
  5. Sézane Albane loafers in burgundy

My Tips for Wearing Your Loafers with Style

I’ve put together four different looks featuring loafers to give you an idea of how I, as a French woman, wear them. I believe you can easily recreate these outfits with pieces you likely already have in your wardrobe. Of course, fashion is all about creativity, so feel free to draw inspiration and style them however you like :)!

I love this chic, masculine-feminine look, and it’s very easy to recreate! Opt for a parka like the long Barn Jacket™ in plaid from J.Crew; alternatively, I found a similar, slightly shorter one at Sandro (currently 30% off!). Pair this jacket with a lovely blue shirt from Marie Marot—the Parisian brand kindly sent me this shirt with no obligation to mention it, and I must say I’m truly impressed with the quality! Choose your usual size. Then, add cropped jeans like these from Agolde and a burgundy leather belt from Sandro. Finish the look with this superb pair of brogues from Tod’s and this new camel-colored bag from Le Tanneur!

I absolutely adore this slightly more sophisticated look, which I believe will be just perfect for Christmas parties or any special occasion this autumn/winter. Pair this lovely tweed dress from Sandro with white tights (as seen at Chanel in recent collections—one of my current obsessions), an off-white faux fur jacket from Ba&sh, and this very pretty pair of loafers from Miu Miu. For a more budget-friendly option in the same style, opt for this pair from Maje. Complete the look with this gorgeous embellished satin clutch.

I love this chic yet casual look—perfect for autumn and everyday wear! I recently purchased this stunning Liddesdale jacket from Barbour (it’s a special edition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the iconic Liddesdale jacket). If you’re considering buying this jacket—which is just perfect for the season—I recommend choosing one size down from your usual, as it’s oversized, and I find that Barbour tends to run large. Wear this jacket with a burgundy turtleneck sweater and cropped jeans. Complete the look with a pair of loafers and this gorgeous Marceau bag from Ateliers Auguste Paris (use my code LC10 to get 10% off at Ateliers Auguste), which I’ve absolutely fallen in love with!

An autumn look that’s a bit more original than usual, inspired by strong bohemian vibes! This season, I’ve unexpectedly fallen for this beautiful navy blue velvet embroidered skirt from the Parisian (and poetic) brand Louise Misha. You can choose to wear it as a full ensemble with the matching Duras jacket. I decided to style it with this Milas suede jacket from Ba&sh and this cream-colored turtleneck from Louise Misha. There’s nothing better to balance a very feminine skirt than pairing it with loafers, which you can wear with little white socks. Complete the look with the charming Swing bag from Ba&sh!

  • I LOVE your blog and I love the sophisticated, chic outfit ideas you give. I was hoping to see more examples of real ladies wearing loafers to get ideas – where do hemlines fall? Do ladies wear socks with short dresses? Love love love your blog.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words Sandra <3! It makes me so happy to hear that you’re loving the blog! If you’re looking for more inspiration, I recommend checking out my recent post on the best street style looks from Paris Fashion Week Spring 2025—there are plenty of examples of ladies wearing loafers. You can also explore the entire Paris Fashion Week category for even more outfit ideas.

When it comes to wearing jeans with loafers, you have two stylish options: you can opt for wide-leg, full-length jeans like the ones the lady is wearing in the photo in this article, or go for cropped straight-leg jeans. The key with cropped jeans is to make sure they hit just above the shoe for a clean, straight line. And yes, you can absolutely wear short dresses or skirts with loafers (or even ballerinas) and little socks for a chic, playful look.

Merci again for your feedback and I’ll keep your suggestions in mind for future posts! xo

  • Dear Léonce,

I am a big fan of loafers over ballet flats or Mary Janes because of their durability and laid-back elegance. Your pairing with the Sandro tweed dress is especially attains the type of classic, elegant, and modern look I am interested in. Thank you for your content; it is inspirational.

    Best,
    Alison

    • Thank you so much Alison for your lovely comment, it truly made my day! I had so much fun writing this article and experimenting with unexpected combinations. I’ll definitely be sharing more diverse looks in the future! I’m so happy to know my content resonates with you <3

  • Love this article. Maybe because being disabled loafers are the only shoes and ballet pumps that I can wear so thank you. So many times especially recently I have felt that I don’t exist because I am disabled. People don’t think you have an opinion about anything. So thank you…

    • Bonjour Denise, thank you very much for your comment and for following the blog <3 Loafers and ballet pumps are my favorite shoe options as well! I'm sorry about your disability! It's a safe space here, remember that you can always have your voice here 🙂
