A few weeks ago, Chemena Kamali, who was appointed Creative Director of Chloé last October, unveiled her pre-fall 2024 collection for the label, just two months after her debut show received critical acclaim. This new collection, set to launch in June (available here), draws inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic 1977 “Musketeer” collection with designs featuring silk caped shirts, fluttery slip dresses, and button-off capes on raincoats.
Kamali’s collection is a balance of romanticism with pragmatism, a hallmark of Chloé since Lagerfeld’s tenure during the ’70s, ’80s, and late ’90s, and carried on by Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, and Hannah McGibbon in the 2000s. In her creative process, Kamali explores how different pieces interact to achieve a balance of formal and informal elements suitable for various occasions—from work to celebrations and everyday wear. In a recent interview with Vogue, Kamali shared her approach to the Chloé wardrobe, focusing on essential, versatile pieces that integrate well with existing wardrobes. “I really was thinking a lot about the Chloé wardrobe, what it should consist of, just, quite frankly, why do I want to wear it? What do I think is important to have in terms of essential pieces, things that go well with other silhouettes that you have at home already?” she explained.
I do love this collection, which compelled me to share my thoughts through this blog post. From the natural makeup and long hairstyles that inspire me to reconsider my own bob cut to the signature elements like capes, tiered ruffle dresses, iconic denim, and staple blouses—the collection resonates with a ’70s romance yet remains utterly contemporary. Kamali seems to be advocating for a thoughtful evolution in fashion, focusing on practicality and adaptability to fit the modern woman’s lifestyle. Each piece is designed for comfort and versatility, avoiding the impractical overt sexiness often seen in designs by male creators. With its muted color palette, this collection is poised to redefine practical, everyday luxury. I predict that next season, Chloé will be the brand everyone wants to wear. Below are ten must-have pieces from Chloé Pre-Fall 2024 collection that I absolutely adore and predict will be highly influential next season. You’re welcome ;).
