A Week of French-Inspired Looks for Spring

Spring is already here — or at least it feels that way in Bordeaux :). So I thought, why not share a new article this week with seven French-inspired outfit ideas for spring, featuring all my favorite pieces I’ve spotted this season? This comes in response to a question from the latest Ask Léonce, where one of you kindly asked for outfit ideas to wear (and to pack in your suitcase) for a trip to Paris in April. I chose the number seven — one look for each day of the week ;). These outfits are inspired by the latest street style spotted during Paris Fashion Week, as well as what I’ve been wearing and loving myself this season. I hope this article brings you the inspiration you came here looking for. And as always, feel free to share your favorite looks in the comments — I’d love to know which ones you’re drawn to.

My Styling Tips for Wearing These Looks

  • Choose straight cuts — not too loose, not too fitted — so that the pieces fall nicely and maintain a clean, flattering line.
  • In these outfits, shirts are meant to be tucked into the trousers.
  • Add a slim belt to create a soft transition between the shirt and the waistband.
  • You can also swap the shirt for a classic white tee if you prefer a more relaxed take on the look.
  • For wide-leg jeans, don’t hesitate to cuff or slightly roll the hem so they sit neatly over your shoes.
  • And if you enjoy wearing skirts in spring, try white or deep burgundy tights — either opaque or sheer. They’re a chic alternative to classic black and very much on trend this season :).

  • Dear Léonce, thanks for these inspirations <3 I hope that Banana Republic will open a store again soon here in Italy..there was a shop in Milan years ago, but unfortunately it has closed. Can't wait to see all the Mango bags, they seem amazing. Have a nice weekend

    • Thank you so much, Melissa, for your lovely message! I completely agree with you! I wish Banana Republic would open a store again here in France as well. Or at least make their online shop available in Europe :)! I love their minimalist-yet-chic basics. And yes, Mango has truly outdone themselves this season! Their bags are so lovely, and I’ve especially been admiring their dresses for special occasions… I even treated myself to one recently ;). Wishing you a wonderful week, xo

  • Hi Mathilde,
I love your newsletter and ideas/tips but I was wondering, as you live in Bordeaux whether there is a different style there? I live in a rural area and would love to see some French country style ideas please.

    • Yes, absolutely! There’s definitely a slight difference in style here in Bordeaux compared to cities like Paris or Amsterdam — it tends to feel a bit more relaxed and understated. I love your idea and will definitely keep it in mind for a future blog post. Merci for the inspiration! xo

  • I always enjoy your posts. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into creating them. They are full of good ideas. I live in Europe and many of your links are to US sites. Would it be possible to also include a European alternative please?

    • Thank you so much, Linda, for your kind words! You’re absolutely right, since most of my audience is based in the US, many of the links I include point to US retailers. That said, it’s often possible to change the country or region on the site once you land on it. I’ll also make sure to keep your suggestion in mind and do my best to include European alternatives whenever a shop doesn’t ship internationally :). xo

  • That all camel look – be still my beating heart! Also loving Jeanne Damas with the wide pants and cropped cardi, and the maxi length tulle skirt outfit. I can shop my closet for looks that channel the vibes of the first two. The maxi length tulle, well, at 44 years old, I might be a little on the older side to pull that one off! (Much as I generally don’t believe in age being any sort of barrier in life).

Per your advice on the timeless pieces that every woman should own, and the post on styling a trench coat, I finally invested in my first ever beige classic trench coat a few weeks ago. I’m loving it and have had so many compliments. I’m British but live in California, so my sensibilities love anything that can deal with rain, but my reality doesn’t have as much need for those items as I’d like! But I’m finding the trench works on those days that I just need a little extra warmth, even if there is no rain in the forecast, so it was definitely a/the piece I didn’t even realize I needed in my wardrobe!

    • Bonjour Lindsey, thank you very much for your comment <3 I'm really glad to hear that you enjoy these outfits that I've curated here! Yes, I agree! The maxi-length tulle outfit might be a little bit complicated to pull off, but for a special soirée, why not? 😉

I'm so happy to hear that you love your beige trench coat and that you're getting so many compliments about it! The trench is definitely the perfect outerwear for milder temps even if it's not raining. I love to wear mine, especially right now :))

  • Enjoyable read. Interesting and informative articles.

  • I am planning a trip to Paris and probably provence for summer 2022. tips on what to pack would be appreciated. I live in Alberta, canada. meeting my daughter and her family there. First 2 weeks of August.
    Regards,
    Sharon

    • Bonjour Sharon! Thank you very much for your comment! I’ve added this blog post idea to my to-do list and will come back with a more detailed article 🙂 xo
