20 Comfortable & Chic Spring Shoes French Women Wear on Repeat

A few weeks ago, I shared a selection of the most beautiful spring jackets for achieving that polished, classic French look. This week, I’m turning my attention to the other essential foundation of a spring wardrobe: shoes. For this edit, I focused on styles that feel both elegant and genuinely comfortable, something that has become entirely non-negotiable for me over the past few years. The most stylish outfits are rarely the most complicated ones; they are the ones you can actually live in.

So which styles deserve a place in the spring rotation?

Loafers, first and foremost. They have quietly become my most-worn pair, because they make even the simplest outfit (a white t-shirt and jeans) feel intentional. Then there are ballet flats in suede or woven leather. I adopted this style last year and still find them incredibly chic. Like loafers, they bring a subtle elegance to even the most relaxed outfits. I’ve also included sandals for those living in warmer climates (in Paris or Amsterdam, we usually have to wait until May before reaching for them), pointed slingbacks with a walkable kitten heel, and sneakers for those weekends when comfort naturally takes the lead.

This season, you’ll notice a shift toward supple suede and soft pastel tones, bringing a sense of lightness and softness to the wardrobe. Toes are returning to a sharper, more pointed shape, while heels are staying low, offering just the right amount of polish without the sacrifice.

If you’d like to go beyond the shopping list and explore the framework behind how French women approach getting dressed, I share those methods inside Les Édits Privés. In this week’s edition (Edit Privé No. 34: How French Women Get Dressed Without Overthinking It) I walk through the simple four-step method and the 9-piece spring capsule that make getting dressed feel almost automatic.

And if you’re currently resetting your wardrobe for the new season, you may also enjoy Edit Privé No. 32: The French Method for an Effortless Spring Wardrobe, where I share the nine transition essentials and the method I use each spring to start the season with clarity. Both are available inside Les Édits Privés.

  1. I was told white trainers definitely label you an “American” and not to wear them when traveling in Europe. Myth or reality??

    1. Myth!
So many of us have these BUT they are on their way out now, in favour of more ‘statement’, or assertive colours. Think adidas leopard print with fuschia trim. It still has to be classy , understated – no neon , and look like something you wouldn’t wear in the gym, I.e. you’ve chosen these shoes with the intention of a sojourn in Paris

      1. A fascinating debate! Sandra, it is largely a myth: white trainers, or even colorful ones, are seen all over the streets of Paris and other European cities today. However, Elisabeth is right; the intent is what matters.

Opt for ‘city’ trainers rather than the ones you would wear to the gym. Pair them with structured pieces like a blazer and jeans, a chic wool coat, a trench, or tailored trousers. My current favorites are the Adidas Samba and the Nike Cortez in suede; they are incredibly comfortable, and the suede texture adds that necessary touch of chic.

    1. Bonjour Simone! I’m sorry about that. The white leather boots with the red heart are no longer available, as they were probably a victim of their own success. However, these boots are available in black patent leather. I’ve updated the link in the article. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, xo.

  2. Bonjour

I am so happy to see these shoes – because I have every style – except for the white Trainers – maybe at my aged (66) I am too old but don’t feel it.

    Denise

    1. Bonjour Denise,
Thank you for your comment! I’m sure a nice pair of white trainers will suit you very well 🙂
White trainers are the most comfortable shoes in my collection, that I always wear those very busy days when I know I’ll walk everywhere.
But as you said, it’s important to wear whatever makes you happy and wherever you feel comfortable!
      xo

  3. My favorite are the ballet shoes and the white sneakers. Am living in Naples, Fl and it is too hot for heels.
