Last week, under the evening sky over West Lake in Hangzhou, China, Chanel unveiled its Métiers d’Art 2024/25 collection. The collection draws inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel’s cherished Coromandel screens, which adorned her Parisian apartment and remained a lifelong source of inspiration for her.
One particular look—a tweed set featuring a jacket and cropped trousers, look number 34, to be precise—completely captivated me! It wasn’t the style of the ensemble that drew my attention (though it’s a classic Chanel silhouette) but rather its stunning shade of blue. And not just any blue! It’s a hue reminiscent of the sky at dusk on a winter evening in the mountains, the violet-tinged blue of iris petals, or even the watery tones of Claude Monet’s water lilies.
After some research, I discovered this blue lies somewhere between “blue-black” and “space cadet”—a deep, dark blue with subtle purple undertones. It’s a rich, sophisticated shade that combines the depth of navy with a touch of indigo and violet, giving it an almost celestial, mysterious quality. I find it pairs beautifully with soft, cozy materials like tweed.
Could this be the defining color of the next autumn/winter season, perhaps even replacing burgundy? Who knows! Below, I’m sharing my mood board inspired by this captivating shade.

I’ve also gathered a few items, some I already own and others on my wishlist, that remind me of this midnight blue shade I adore:
- A petrol-blue faux fur coat from Sézane that, sadly, is no longer available. I bought it a few years ago at L’Appartement in London’s Notting Hill, and I pull it out every winter on the coldest days. I found a similar coat from Apparis here in both short and long versions.
- Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue from the Les Légendaires collection, created in 1912 by Jacques Guerlain. It’s been on my wishlist for years! Notes of powder, iris, violet accord, and vanilla, everything I’m loving right now. I’m still debating between the Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette. If you’ve tried both, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
- A Guerlain makeup palette in color Mystic Peacock I bought a while ago featuring two stunning blue shades I love wearing for evening looks.
- A midnight-blue knit maxi dress from Sézane, perfect for pairing with pretty white tights and classic black leather ankle boots.
- Diptyque’s Étoile Christmas candle, with rosy sandalwood, mimosa, and iris notes.
- Violette_FR’s Yeux Paint in Bleu de Minuit and Ciel de Nuit both on my wishlist for adding a moody touch to any eye look.
- A gold floral embroidery toiletry bag from Sézane I bought as a Christmas gift for my loved ones, as I mentioned here.
Lastly, I dream of a tweed jacket in this mysterious, violet-tinged midnight blue — not a classic navy but something deeper and more intriguing. I’d pair it with a crisp white shirt and either leather trousers or simple jeans with black patent ankle boots. In fact, something quite similar to Chanel’s look number 34 ;).
Bonjour, I’m Léonce—though my real name is Mathilde Pittet. As a French creator, I offer a curated perspective on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle—an ode to le chic à la française. Through Léonce Chenal, I invite you to explore the timeless allure of French style and the stories that bring it to life.
Hi Léonce! For me it’s definitely L’Heure Bleue eau de parfum. I’ve been wearing it for over thirty years and it’s just so elegant and understated. People always complement me on how good I smell and that it’s subtle. For special occasions I wear the perfume and if it’s particularly hot and humid out I wear the eau de toilette. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the eau de parfum and eau de toilette, Victoria! <3 I was torn between the two, and now I feel like I might need both, haha—or at least the eau de parfum for this winter, which sounds absolutely divine! Guerlain fragrances are truly exceptional. I recently received a sample of Rose Amira (with rose, patchouli, woody, and spicy notes), and I fell in love—even though I’m not usually a rose fan. My partner loves Cuir Beluga from the L’Art et la Matière collection, which I gifted him for Christmas. Guerlain perfumes really are a timeless choice!
I LOVE deep blue! Smokey blue, navy blue, French blue, that grey that’s almost blue. It’s such a flattering color for those with cool-toned skin. I prefer navy to black. I find it’s softer and shows off the person rather than the harsh black color against the skin.
I’ll pass on blue eyeshadow though!
Thank you so much for your comment Gaye! I totally agree that deep blue tones are much more flattering for cool-toned skin (and definitely softer than black). Haha, no worries—I completely understand that blue eyeshadow can be a bit intimidating at first ;)!
Hello Léonce! I’m obsessed with this gorgeous, dark winter color. And how timely your article (and Chanel’s debut of it) as I’ve just asked my mom for an an elegant, dark navy loungewear set for Christmas. Well, my mom is purchasing it as my daughter’s gift to me. 🙂 Love your fashion blog…I consider is the crème de la crème. <3
Oh la la! Thank you so much, Laura, for your lovely compliment! I couldn’t agree more—dark navy is such a beautiful winter color. Your loungewear set will be incredibly chic and timeless ;). Wishing you and your family a beautiful holiday season!
Hi Léonce, this colour is beautiful, so chic and misterious. I hope to read soon your opinion about the new Pantone colour for 2025 and maybe some tips about how to style it. I’m studying french and one of my wish for the future is to be able to write a comment in this beautiful language soon! Best wishes <3
Bonjour Melissa, Thank you so much for your lovely comment! What a fantastic idea to create a blog post inspired by the new Pantone color for 2025, especially since it has such a chic, Max Mara-esque or Hermès-esque vibe. Oh là là, I love it! I’m excited to share some styling tips soon. And how wonderful that you’re studying French! I can’t wait to read your comments en français someday! Best wishes, and merci encore! xo
