What I’m Wearing This Summer: French, Minimal, and City-Ready

Chiara Marina Grioni/launchmetrics.com/spotlight

In France, we have a saying: “Les cordonniers sont toujours les plus mal chaussés,” which, as far as I know, has its English equivalent: “The cobbler’s children go barefoot.” In other words, we don’t always enjoy the benefits of our own profession. And I must admit that’s a bit of my story! I spend countless hours every day searching for the perfect fashion piece to inspire you, curating looks, and putting together shopping edits, yet sometimes, I forget to actually shop for myself :).

This summer, I’ll be spending most of my time in the city, here in Amsterdam. After weeks of rain and chilly weather, the sun is finally back, and they’re forecasting temperatures as high as 29°C (84,2°F) by Friday! Moving gave me a chance to clear out my wardrobe, but I have to confess: I don’t have much to wear this season.

So, I had an idea: why not combine business with pleasure and share everything I’ve added to my cart, and what I’ve already ordered? In this list, you’ll find essentials and basics, but also a few standout pieces, always chosen with the idea of being easy to wear day-to-day without ever feeling overdone. I focused on items that mix and match effortlessly, whether with each other or with what’s already in my closet (and probably in yours, too!). Aesthetically, I’ve been drawn to pieces with clean lines and a minimalist feel, those that say “effortless sophistication” when paired together, yet remain comfortable to wear. (You guessed it: comfort is absolutely non-negotiable for me!) With just a few exceptions, most of these pieces are also office-friendly.

I thought this selection might spark some ideas for refreshing your own summer wardrobe, whether you’re in New York, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Toronto, Chicago, Seattle… or even the countryside (though I’m afraid it might not be so helpful at the moment for my friends in Australia!). But who knows? Maybe you’ll be inspired to add a touch of French chic to your summer, too ;).

Classic White T-Shirts

These are truly the foundation of my wardrobe, no matter the season. I picked up a few in 100% cotton, some with a slightly tailored fit, others with a more relaxed, straight cut. On days when I have no idea what to wear and just want to feel comfortable, I’ll throw on a white tee, a pair of light-wash jeans (my current obsession), and sneakers. All it takes is a refined little jacket layered over the top to elevate the whole look.

Linen Shirts

I already have quite a few in my wardrobe, so I simply added this one in a soft light blue, 100% linen and just right with a pair of beige linen trousers.

Tops

With a pear-shaped silhouette, I find that fitted tops that highlight the waist are what suit me best. I chose two styles: a peplum top in crisp white, and a halter-style knit. Both pair effortlessly with just about anything.

Waistcoats

Waistcoats are everywhere this season, and I couldn’t resist this one in a lovely soft vanilla shade, perfect layered over a simple white tank. I also picked up this fine-knit version in ecru, which I plan to wear with my light blue Frame jeans, a longtime favorite in my wardrobe.

Linen Trousers

I adore linen trousers in summer. They’re the perfect alternative to jeans when the heat makes denim feel too heavy. I chose this beautiful beige pair (machine-washable, thankfully), which I’ll wear with pale blue cotton or linen shirts.

Light Blue Jeans

I have a real soft spot for light-wash denim at the moment, it just feels like summer. I already own two pairs, but I couldn’t resist this one (especially since it’s called Matilda). It’s medium-rise, straight-leg, classic and exactly what I was looking for. Other options I love: The Secret Sauce by AYR or The Lax by Frame.

Dresses

I fell for this short linen-blend dress, simple, but quietly chic. I’m also drawn to this peplum dress with a slightly gladiator-inspired silhouette that echoes recent Dior runway looks, perfect for pear-shaped figures like mine. And I’ve added this aqua green piece to my wishlist: more polished, office-friendly, and in the loveliest shade.

Cardigans & Jackets

I already have what I need in terms of jackets, but I couldn’t resist this beautiful beige cardigan, with its sculptural gold buttons reminiscent of Schiaparelli.

Flats

When it comes to shoes, I’ve been wearing my vintage blue suede Nike Cortez non-stop lately, they’re incredibly comfortable. I also ordered this elegant pair from Adidas Originals + Sporty & Rich. And on my wishlist: The Woven Paz by Margaux, a perfect city sandal for summer.

A Tote

I had a real crush on this beautiful Linea tote bag from Cuyana (a thoughtful gift from the brand), which calls to mind The Row’s N/S Park tote in textured leather.

  1. I was recently in Lisbon, unfortunately, my luggage fell behind in Los Angeles and did not arrive when I did. I went to Mango and they could not have been more helpful. I bought several pieces to tide me over while my bag made its solo trip to Portugal.
I love all the pieces I purchased there, all well made classic pieces that easily fit into my wardrobe. I would highly recommend!
Thanks for your posts, I love your insight….and recipes.
    Cheers,
    Terry

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, Terry! What an unexpected travel story, but I’m glad to hear Mango came to the rescue! 🙂

I just received the pieces I mentioned in that post, and I’m really happy with them. I do need to exchange a few tops for a size S, as I have a small bust, but otherwise, I’m so pleased. I especially love the jeans, the T-shirts, and the new beige cardigan, it feels so chic.

I’m so hppy to hear you’re enjoying the posts, and the recipes too! Merci <3

  2. Mango is a step above Zara. I was recently in Barcelona but every time I had the time, they were closed for lunch etc.
No reviews and no sizing chart on website. Disappointing.
Very bad reviews on Trusted Pilot.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, JD!

That does sound frustrating. It’s curious, as in Amsterdam (and in many cities I’ve visited), Mango stores typically remain open throughout the day, perhaps it was a local exception.

In terms of sizing, Mango does provide a size guide online here: https://shop.mango.com/us/en/size-guide. Personally, I’ve found their fit quite consistent, I usually take a French 38 (M), and if I hesitate between two sizes, I size up and have it adjusted.

As for reviews, I always take aggregated platforms with a grain of salt, the numbers don’t always reflect the full picture. I’ve personally had reliable experiences with both Mango and Zara over the years.

I aim to balance quality and affordability in my wardrobe, and while I often admire more sustainable, high-end brands, I also choose pieces that align with my current needs and means, as I think many of us do.

I really appreciate your perspective, it’s always enriching to share thoughts like these. Merci <3

  3. This is a perfect summer wardrobe for someone who likes a tailored outfit. Thank you for your excellent style advice. I have never ordered from Mango. Is their brand true to size?

    1. Thank you so much, Sarah! I’m really glad you enjoyed the summer wardrobe selection. In my personal experience, Mango tends to run true to size. I’m generally a French 38 and usually order everything in size M. When in doubt between two sizes, I prefer to size up and then have the piece tailored to fit my shape, it always makes a difference 🙂 Hope that helps!
