Fall is already here! And now is the perfect time to unearth the best fall jackets. You know, the ones for the days when it’s too early for the winter coats, but it’s crisp enough that you need an extra layer.
But what jacket style to look for this fall? Well, this season, the best fall jackets go back to basics with classic silhouettes thanks to styles like timeless trench coats, classic black & white tweed jackets à la Chanel, and checked wool-blend blazers for a masculin-féminin look. Like true investment pieces, these fall jackets are among those French wardrobe staples that only get better with time.
Also, new trends like slightly oversized shackets —a crossover between a shirt and a jacket, and coatigans can transform any ensemble and make you look instantly put together.
As you will by now have gathered, this season, there are many fall jacket styles from which to choose. And if you’re not sure about which one to pick, in today’s post, I’ve gathered some of the chicest fall jackets of the season. Keep scrolling to see and shop la crème de la crème of fall jackets.
1. The Timeless Trench Coat
With its timeless details and neutral color palette, a beige trench coat is a prime example of a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style! It’s the perfect coat for this transitional autumn period between light jackets to heavy-duty coats and perfect for those rainy days ahead.
But trench coats are more than just transitional heroes: they’ll see you through almost every situation, in any season. It’s definitely an item you can wear and hold onto forever and is one style worth investing in.
Being French, the trench is one of my favorite outerwear for the autumn season. I’ve had a few different styles over the years, but my two favorites are Sézane’s Scott trench coat and Burberry’s The Chelsea trench coat.
2. The Tweed Jacket
The tweed jacket is the perfect transitional piece for fall. This fall wardrobe staple instantly pulls together any look with a bit of polish and sophistication. Tweed is a fabric traditionally associated with the cooler months and this jacket style will serve you well into the autumn and beyond.
This season, consider opting for a cropped fitted tweed jacket in classic shades (black, white, beige) with outré details and topped off with golden buttons and other embellishments. I love this very classic yet chic Maje Textured double-faced coat. The tweed jacket can also be paired with coordinating tweed skirts or shorts.
3. The Wool-Blend Blazer
The blazer is probably one of the hardest working pieces in a French woman’s wardrobe as it brings polish to any look. And in fall, blazers work as the ultimate layering tool! You can wear them over basically anything (from a basic t-shirt to a classic turtleneck) and you’ll look major.
This season, power-shouldered blazers are back. And I’m not talking about the slightly oversized fits from previous seasons but more about enveloping jackets with larger shoulder pads than usual like this gorgeous Gucci Love Parade logo-label hopsack blazer. For a more classic autumnal blazer style opt for this fabulous Veronica Beard houndstooth checked tweed blazer.
4. The Coatigan
The coatigan is the ideal outerwear option for cool autumns and surprisingly mild winters. Usually made of wool, the coatigan is simply a cross between a coat and a cardigan.
Contrary to the classic cardigan, the coatigan is not meant for layering and to wear under a coat, trench coat, or puffer. Instead, it’s more like a light, soft coat without a lining or like a long cardigan for wearing outdoors.
This season, I love Sandro’s style coatigan in black and white like this Sandro Long houndstooth cardigan and this oversized printed coatigan. I have both of them in my wardrobe and I love to wear them over a shirt, a basic t-shirt or a turtleneck.
5. The Shacket
The versatile shacket (a.k.a. the shirt jacket) is all you need to transition from autumn to winter. If you’re not familiar with the term, a shacket is essentially a slightly oversize shirt-jacket hybrid.
When made of wool-blend, this style is absolutely the perfect layering piece through fall. I’ve just bought this Maje smooth double-faced jacket that is super comfortable to wear yet très chic. Slightly oversized, I can layer it over a thick turtleneck or knitwear throughout the colder temps. I have this gorgeous Totême scarf-detailed wool jacket on my wishlist as well!
