I never had to deal with acne during my teenage years; my skin was always clear and healthy. I thought acne was something I’d left behind in adolescence. But a few years ago, in my late twenties, my skin started breaking out. Suddenly, I was dealing with sensitive skin, redness on my cheeks and nose, whiteheads, pimples on my jawline, forehead, and cheeks, and combination/oily skin. I tried so many different things over the years to find a solution to these skin issues that I never expected to face as an adult. Thankfully, my skin has been clear and healthy for several months now, and I couldn’t be happier!
In this blog post, I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned on this journey. I’ll tell you what worked for my skin, the products I’ve tested and loved, and the ones I still use today. I want to give you the kind of advice I wish I had a few years ago. Just a heads-up: I’m not a doctor or dermatologist, but I’m just sharing my personal experience. What works for my skin might not work the same way for yours. It’s always a good idea to seek professional advice from your GP, gynecologist, or dermatologist :).
This post is not sponsored, and all opinions are my own. I only feature products I truly love and personally select. If you purchase through my links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Merci!
1. Nourishing Your Skin from the Inside Out
I know it’s easier said than done, but the first thing I recommend for keeping your skin happy is to eat a healthy diet. Fill your plate with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and pulses, and try to steer clear of dairy, sweets, sugary drinks, and goodies made from white flour. An esthetician recommended this to me while I was living in London. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “There is some evidence that specific dietary changes may help reduce the risk of acne. For example, one meta-analysis showed a link between dairy products and increased risk of acne. And some studies have linked high-glycemic-index foods (those that cause blood sugar levels to rise more quickly) and acne.”
Personally, I notice a big difference in my skin when I consume a lot of dairy (I’m French, and I love cheese, so I can’t help myself) and sweets. I usually get breakouts after indulging in products like ice creams, cakes, and other highly processed biscuits and sweets. That’s why I always recommend cooking and baking your own treats—you can control the quality of the ingredients and limit the sugar in the recipe. I’m a huge fan of real Italian, homemade ice cream, which is why I plan to purchase Smeg’s Stand Mixer with its Ice Cream Maker to make my own ice cream this summer and limit the amount of sugar and dairy in my recipes ;).
Besides these dietary changes, some supplements can help acne-prone skin, like Zinc (like Solgar Zinc), which a dermatologist in France recommended to me. Last year, I bought Aime’s Pure Glow and Balance & Glow supplements. After several weeks, I noticed significant improvements in my skin—less oiliness, reduced redness, and fewer breakouts. I have to confess, though, that it’s not easy for me to stick to taking supplements since I often forget to take them in the morning ;).
2. My Skincare Favorites for Blemish-Prone Skin
I can’t recommend French pharmacy brands enough, especially if you have acne-prone skin! Over the years, I’ve tried a ton of different products, and there are still so many more I’m excited to test. Here, I’ll share two types of products: the ones I’ve tested and loved (meaning I saw a noticeable difference in my skin after a few weeks and would definitely repurchase) and the ones I’m planning to try in the future. If you’ve already tried any of these, please let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts and maybe save some time and money ;)!
First, here are a few products I highly recommend:
- A gentle facial wash for oily skin: La Roche Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel. It cleanses and purifies without over-drying. I still use it today. It’s very similar to Avène’s Cleanance Cleansing Gel.
- A game-changer serum: La Roche Posay Effaclar Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Serum. I absolutely love this serum—it really does clear acne blemishes, helps prevent new breakouts, and visibly reduces pores, fine lines, and post-acne marks. I use it once or twice a week in the evening. Just remember, it contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so don’t forget to apply sun protection during the day.
- A gentle, non-photosensitizing serum: Caudalie’s Pore Minimizing Serum. Formulated with natural salicylic acid, polyphenols, and niacinamide, it’s a fantastic serum for acne-prone skin that really delivers!
- An SOS cream for quick acne reduction: La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Duo+M Anti-Blemish Gel Moisturiser. This anti-imperfection treatment is perfect for use in the evening when my skin has breakouts. I can see a difference by morning! It’s an anti-relapse acne treatment that I always keep in my beauty stash.
- A spot solution to reduce breakout size: Caudalie’s Color Correcting Spot Solution. I apply a thin layer only to acne spots as soon as they appear. It helps reduce the size of breakouts and prevents post-acne marks.
- A clay mask to cleanse impurities: Caudalie’s Instant Detox Mask. I absolutely love this mask! I use it occasionally when my skin needs a pick-me-up or before a special occasion. It leaves my skin looking brighter and clearer.
I haven’t yet found the perfect moisturizer for my skin; sometimes, they’re too greasy or not moisturizing enough. Right now, I’m using Clarins Multi-Active Day and Night Face Creams, which I love, but they’re a bit too greasy for my skin in the summer. If you have any recommendations, please share them—I’d really appreciate it!
There are several products I’m excited to try in the future (I’ll update this post with my thoughts and results).
- SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense: This serum has gotten amazing reviews, and I’ve heard so many good things about it. I’m really curious to see how it works for me.
- Sisley Paris Intensive Serum and Deeply Purifying Mask: This range is specifically for combination/oily and acne-prone skin, and it sounds super promising.
- SVR’s Sebiaclear: SVR is one of my favorite French pharmacy brands. I love some of their products, so I’m really eager to try their Sebiaclear range.
- Avène’s Cleanance Night Blemish Correcting & Age Renewing Cream: This product is designed for adult blemish-prone skin with early signs of aging, and I’m very curious about it.
3. My Skincare Routine Tweaks
I’ve also made a few changes to my skincare routine. For example, I stopped using micellar water and cleansing wipes to remove makeup because I felt my skin wasn’t getting properly cleaned. Instead, I prefer to double cleanse using a cleansing oil (I love the almond smell of Caudalie’s Vinoclean Cleansing Oil, and Clarins’ Total Cleansing Oil is also fantastic!) followed by a gentle facial wash (like Caudalie’s Gentle Foaming Cleanser, or Clarins’ Purifying Gentle Foaming Cleanser).
Even with SPF 50, I avoid the sun like the plague because I always notice breakouts and pimples after a few days in the sun on vacation. If your budget allows, I highly recommend visiting your esthetician for a Hydrafacial treatment. I used to get them regularly in Amsterdam, and it’s a wonderful 30-minute treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and delivers a variety of rejuvenating serums. I always notice a significant improvement right after the treatment: my skin looks clearer and brighter. Finally, since I have combination skin and experience oiliness in the T-zone throughout the day, I’ve become a fan of powder foundations. As I explained in my previous post about my summer makeup look, my current favorite is Aime’s Powder Foundation SPF.
Et voilà! I hope this blog post helps you on your journey to clear skin! I’d love to hear your recommendations or thoughts on the products I mentioned. Please share your experiences—let’s help each other out :)! Merci!
Bonjour! I’m Léonce, the founder of Léonce Chenal, a blog dedicated to French fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. I’m French and launched Léonce Chenal in 2018 while working as a data analyst in London, inspired to share my love of effortless French style. After living in Paris, London, and Amsterdam, I’ve now settled in the beautiful city of Bordeaux. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me baking pâtisseries, exploring hidden museums, or on the hunt for the perfect perfume.
Thank you for your post, Léonce!
I’m in my 30s and have oily and pro-acre skin. I was long searching for the right moisturizer and with SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age I finally found it. First I was hesitating because of the price, but in my opinion it’s worth every cent.
Also I was long searching for a sunscreen which will not clogg my pores, and with Heliocare gel oil-free I found it. Those two products really made a big difference for me. And I can highly recommend them.
Thank you so much for sharing your recommendations, Anna! I’ve heard great things about SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age, and I’m happy to hear it’s worth the investment for you. I’ll definitely keep the Heliocare gel oil-free sunscreen in mind, too!
Try Guerlain, worked excellently for me in my 20s here in ZAF
Thank you for the recommendation, Lynette! I love Guerlain, glad to know it worked well for you :).
I guess I’m pretty lucky in that I rarely get blemishes, unless its a few days after I’ve had my entire face threaded. In saying that, I definitely notice a difference if I’ve not been staying hydrated, and I have chronic psoriasis on my scalp line and elbows – salycyclic acid products are helpful with both of these places.
My mam was a geriatric nurse in a nursing home and I would occasionally accompany her to work if she was popping in to check on one of “my oldies” if they’d not been doing well (talk about an example of caring about your work, and more importantly, people). Over the years I saw multiple women with amazing skin, especially for their ages – 80’s and 90’s – and I always asked for secrets. Pretty much 90%+ said Ponds cold cream for make up removal and face cleansing, and Oil of Olay products for moisturization. That was good enough for me! I use a rotation of their face washes on a morning (vitamin C, gentle scrub, retinol, shea butter), then their vitamin C eye cream, their vitamin C serum mixed with a tinted SPF 50 serum from L’Oreal, and finally their SPF 25 regenerist moisturizer. At night, Ponds to cleanse, followed by either the regular Olay night cream, one of their overnight gel masks, or their retinol night cream. Simple, relatively inexpensive, and effective for me. I’m 46 and work with university students, who often express shock when I mention my age. So unless they’re all just supremely polite, I feel like I’m doing something right!
Thank you so much Lindsey for sharing your skincare routine and story! You’re definitely doing something right if the university students are shocked by your age—what a compliment! It’s inspiring to hear about your mom’s dedication and the wisdom you gained from the women she cared for. I don’t know Ponds cold cream and Oil of Olay products, but I’m very curious to try these products now :). I’ll definitely keep your tips in mind. Merci <3
I loved this article. As an Esthetician I’m recommending products all the time especially for light moisturizers. One that I recommend is a water based moisturizer from Dermalogica called Active Moist. It is light and since it water based it will not clog your pores. This is my go to moisturizer in the warm months.
Thank you so much for your recommendation Maggi! I’ll definitely give Dermalogica’s Active Moist a try. It sounds perfect for the warm months. I’m glad you enjoyed the article :)!
Double cleansing is a must for me. As for the moisturizer, I have had a good experience using Black Seed Oil on my face to avoid breakouts. It has strong antibacterial and anti-inflamatory properties, while hydrating the skin nicely. I would recommend using it in the evening only, while the skin is still little damp after washing my face. Slowly massaging it into the skin. And then gently wiping any residue in the morning with a soft tissue. It needs to be organic and cold pressed. Good luck on your skin care journey! 🙂
Thank you Miroslava for sharing your skincare routine! Double cleansing is a must for me too! I will definitely give Black Seed Oil a try—it sounds like it has wonderful benefits. Merci <3
As a moisturizer I can highly recommend “la Solution 10” de Chanel. It works perfect with the “Hyaluron B3 Serum” from Avène, if you need a little more moisture. I have Rosacea and only the Solution 10 works for me – it’s not greasy, it absorbs quickly and doesn’t contain alcohol. Just give it a try
Thank you very much Sabine for the recommendation! I’m very curious about “La Solution 10” de Chanel and have added it to my beauty wishlist :). I’ll definitely give it a try! Merci xo
I love the Clarins range of products. I too, had some concerns with blemished skin, and regular use of their range really helped.
A specialist advised me to splash my face each evening, about ten times with hot water, and to immediately apply my night crème. She also suggested changing face towels and pillowcases daily, and drinking a lot of pure water. This helped me as I noticed an almost immediate improvement.
Thank you very much Valérie for sharing your experience! I love Clarins too! I’ll definitely try your specialist’s advice—splashing my face with hot water before applying my night cream, changing face towels and pillowcases daily, and drinking lots of water. It sounds like it made a big difference for you
I love your blog! I’ve had hormonal breakouts since my teens years and La Roche Posay’s Effaclar line works really well for me. For moisturizer, Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion is clean and light. Don’t forget Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 to exfoliate a couple times a week! Thank you for all the other suggestions, too.
Thank you Brigid for your lovely comment! I’m glad to hear that you find La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar line helpful—it’s a must for acne-prone skin. Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion sounds like a great, lightweight option—thank you for this recommendation, I’ll definitely give it a try. Yes, the Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 is definitely on my beauty wishlist :). I’m happy you found the other suggestions useful, merci <3
I have found that Typology has very good moisturizers that are very lightweight! It’s a French brand, you fill out a survey addressing your skin concerns and it “diagnoses” you. I’ve switched most of my skin care to Typology and haven’t been disappointed.
Thank you Nicolette for your recommendations! I’ve heard many good things about Typology, mostly from influencers through paid partnerships, which made me a bit skeptical. But hearing about your positive experience definitely puts it on my list to try
I loved your recomendations and I love your blog! I had the same problem and I often bring it back when I try new products, so I do so deep researches before I buy a thing and still its hard to find something which actually work. I agree about the whole la roche posay products, you can try the local treatment cream of the same brand – it is amazing. Also I loved the avene night cleanance cream. Now they are changing the package and they dont sell it in my country for now but I hope to bring it back with the same formula. For the day cream I dont have a fav too, but I am buying often the la roche toleriane one for oily skin.
Thank you Doroteya! I really appreciate your kind words about my blog . I think the La Roche-Posay local treatment you’re referring to is the Effaclar Duo, which I used many years ago, and it worked wonders on my skin! I’ve also tried the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo day and night creams, but they feel a bit too greasy for me—probably due to the shea butter in them. Thank you again for sharing your recommendations <3
For summer months I love the nuxe crème prodigieuse boost crème-gel multi-correction, for winter though I do need something a little richer. I’ve been wanting to try the Bioderma cleansing oil for makeup removal, but I also like the Superfacialist cleansing oil too. My skin struggles with AHA so I use a the Paula’s Choice BHA toner 2-3 times a week. The best facial sunscreen I’ve found so far is the Purito Daily Go-To sunscreen spf50+. So far it’s the only one not to make my eyes water and doesn’t break me out in the way physical sunscreens do.
Thank you Tijana for sharing your favorites! The Nuxe Crème Prodigieuse Boost Crème-Gel sounds perfect for summer. I didn’t know Bioderma had a cleansing oil—I’ve added it to my list of products to try. It sounds like you have a solid routine! It’s wonderful to find products that work well for your skin without causing irritation 🙂
