Today I want to share with you my best tips on how to wear red lipstick every day. I think we all love the idea of wearing red lipstick in the evening, but what about wearing red lipstick during the day? If red lipstick can add instant chic to any outfit, sometimes it can look a bit too much. There are gorgeous shades of red, and amazing textures but red lipstick is not easy to wear during the day. And there’s so much that can go wrong; like getting it on your teeth or fading in an awkward way. To make things simpler, here are my best tips on how to wear red lipstick every day and to perfect your look.
How To Wear Red Lipstick Every Day
1. Find the right lipstick shade for your skin tone
First, you need to know that the color red is split into various tone categories: true red, blue tone, and orange tone. And, different reds may work better for different skin tones. The best way to decide which lipstick shade is best for you is to check your undertones and the tone of the lipstick. Indeed, if you’re cooler (pink, red or blue undertones), blue-based reds work better on you. Think deep cranberry, cherry or burgundy shades such as Fenty Stunna Lip Paint in Uncensored, Mac Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo or Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Magnet in Vibrato.
Whereas yellow-based tones are more flattering for warmer skin (yellow or golden undertones in your skin). Opt for reds in the orange spectrum like salmon, coral, burnt sienna or auburn, like the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterious Red, Nars Audacious Lipstick in Lana or the Mac Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger.
I’ll recommend holding the shade next to your lips, it will give you a good indication whether or not the color will suit you. Another tip is to ask the vendor to try the color first before buying it. In that way, you can experiment with different shades to find your signature red. Try them all – the right one is the one that brings your complexion to life.
If you are a beginner, I’ll recommend you the Matte Lipstick by M.A.C. in Russian Red. It’s right in the middle of warm and cool tones, making it the perfect red lipstick for every skin tone.
2. Find the perfect lipstick finish and formula
My second tips on how to wear red lipstick every day would be to find the finish that you’re most comfortable with. You can choose between matte, glossy, sheer, cream, and liquid lipstick. A glossy texture makes the lips look full and luscious whereas a matte is a pigment-rich texture with intense color. A creamy lipstick is one of my favorite texture; it’s a soft satin, semi-matte finish, and color-rich.
Usually, if I’m wearing a bright red lipstick I’ll go for a matte texture. However, if I’m wearing a darker shade I’ll prefer to use a creamy rich lipstick formula as it will bring light and soften my features.
One tip if you want your lipstick to last all night is to pile on products and textures. First, you can fill in your lip with a waterproof lip pencil. Then, apply a matte lipstick directly from the tube. Apply another layer of lipstick and smush your lips onto a tissue.
3. Don’t forget to exfoliate your lips
My third tip on how to wear red lipstick is to exfoliate your lips before any lipstick application. You can do so with a lip scrub, a mechanical exfoliator for the face or an old toothbrush. It will allow you to have a smooth and flawless application and will prolong the longevity of your lipstick.
I like to use the Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, Tom Ford Beauty Lip Exfoliator, or the Fenty Pro Kiss’r Lip-Loving Scrubstick. Starting by using a lip scrub will give you a smooth, hydrated surface to work with.
4. And to apply a nourishing lip balm
Don’t forget to apply a nourishing lip balm or a primer to moisturize your lips before applying your lipstick. Lip balm is essential if you want smooth lips and to prevent the color from bleeding. I would recommend using a lip-prep product that’s not very emollient; hydrating without a heavy texture. If you’re used to applying a lot of lip balm, let it set several minutes before applying lipstick.
If you choose a matte finish you can put a lip balm over your lip color, so the pigment has a chance to absorb into the skin. My favorite ones are Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin, RMS Beauty Lip & Skin Balm Simply Vanilla or the EOS Lip Balm Vanilla Mint.
5. Keep the rest of your make-up simple
If you don’t know what makeup to wear with red lipstick, here is my everyday French makeup look. I like to keep my beauty looks natural for the most part, which means using concealer where necessary and Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer for a natural dewy finish. Finally, I just use a hint of blush or bronzer and one coat of mascara to open up my eyes.
My advice would be to let your lip do the talking: it’s a daytime look so keep your overall makeup simple and natural. However, a smoky eye AND red lip is quite a statement, so probably best saved for the evening. Keeping everything else very minimal will brighten your face and open up your eyes. For the hair, I mostly kept my hair down, but sometimes would tie it in a low bun.
