French Beauty Secrets from a French Blogger

Here I’m revealing my best French beauty secrets and all the French beauty products I can’t live without. If you’ve always wondered how to achieve the “Parisian look”, here are 7 French beauty secrets from a Parisian girl.

7 beauty secrets of French women

#1 Eat well

One of the French beauty secrets has to do with diet! Being a French, I truly believe that beauty begins with what’s inside. The French diet is all about cooking whole foods from small markets and excluding all kind of processed foods. The French diet is quite similar to the Mediterranean-type diet with an emphasis on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, fish and some dairy and meat.

French women, in general, eat a pretty balanced diet, and in addition, limit their consumption of sugary foods (cookies, biscuits, cakes, chocolate, etc.). Thereby, this diet is providing all the nutrients (vitamins and mineral) that are not only good for the health but also for the skin!

If you want to know more about the French diet I’ve written a complete post about it: how to eat like a French woman.

#2 Detox once a year

In addition to a balanced diet, French women usually detox at least once a year. Detox can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health. Detox is simple; it’s just about removing and eliminating toxins for a few days and feeding your body with healthy nutrients.

I usually do a 3-day juice cleanse each year in order to reset my body and clear my complexion. During three days, I remove wheat, dairy, refined sugar, coffee, and any kind of solid food, and I solely drink juices, tea, and water. For this detox, you can either prepare homemade juices (which is the best) or you can have them delivered to your doorstep: Juicelab (Paris) and Press (London) are perfect for that!

#3 Leave your hair alone

After several bleaching and dying, daily heat styling and endless hair product testing, your hair could experience some signs of damage like split ends, breakage and shorter hair at the roots. Instead of chopping it all into a pixie, the French have some tips to get strong, healthy and shiny hair.

First, avoid blow drying your hair especially if you’re washing your hair every day. Simply wash your hair before bed and sleep on damp hair. You’ll get that naturally tousled texture and gorgeous body and shape when you wake up. Another tip is to use a dry shampoo to avoid washing your hair too often or to give volume to thin hair.

Regarding hair products, you could stop using any hair product which contains silicone. Silicone is not a natural ingredient and its side effect are bad for the hair. Instead, you will be able to find plenty of silicone-free shampoos and conditioners. For example, I really love the Klorane’s Oat milk Shampoo or Evolve’s Superfood Shine Shampoo.

“Silicone is almost like rubber and/or plastic. […] It gives the hair the illusion of shine, but it is not the shine we want—it is a fake shine from the plastic.” Source: Coveteur

#4 Keep makeup simple and natural

It’s one of the main French beauty secrets if you’ve always wanted to look like a Parisian girl. French women don’t rely on makeup but instead, they are using makeup just to enhance their natural features. French makeup isn’t over-sculpted or too transformative and needs to remain natural and minimalist.

To achieve the perfect French makeup, the secret is to skip foundation. For the French, the coverage of the foundation is way too heavy. Instead, they’re simply using a concealer where necessary (under the eyes, around the nose etc.) or a tinted moisturizer. The goal of the French makeup is not to cover or to hide, instead the goal is to highlight certain features.

If you want to go a little bolder, choose to focus on one feature; whether it’s red lipstick or smudgy eyeliner. Keep everything else very minimal for a high impact.

#5 Take skincare very seriously

A stellar skincare routine is one of the most important French beauty secrets. French women take skincare very seriously, not only for great skin today but for great skin in the future. The French will always seek up for qualitative (maybe expensive) beauty products. They use to stick with what they know works instead of changing their skincare beauty routine every week. French girls take their skincare very seriously from a young age.

When planning what beauty products are worth investment, French women put all their money into keeping their skin naturally radiant and clear. The French use sunscreen, balms, micellar waters, serums and even dry oil to help take care of their skin. Basically, if you take care of your skin, your complexion will look amazing even without makeup.

#6 Go to the pharmacy

Another French beauty secret lies in the local pharmacy. In France, pharmacies are much more than drugstores. French pharmacy is the ultimate health and beauty destination where you can find a full range of affordable and effective beauty products, working in harmony with all skin types, and even the most sensitive skins.

French women usually go to their local pharmacy to get some advice from their pharmacists. Depending on your skin concern, pharmacists can suggest specific beauty products tailored for their skin type.

#7 Pick a signature fragrance

As French woman, I couldn’t imagine leaving the house without wearing my perfume. For French women, perfume isn’t something you save for special occasions. Instead, spritzing perfume is usually part of the morning beauty routine. In general, French women have 3 up to 10 different perfumes in their cabinet. Each morning, they choose which fragrance they want to wear that day, depending on the mood. The tip is to spray a small amount behind the ears, on the back of your neck and on the wrists.

Et voila!

Hello Sylvia 🙂 I love using the Klorane Oatmilk Ultra-Gentle Conditioner for every day and the Vichy Dercos Nutrients Detox Lightweight Conditioner when my hair is dull and oily. I like to apply Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil on the ends of my hair, and I love the Rene Furterer Karite Hydra Hydrating Shine Mask to hydrate and moisturize my hair. Hope that helps 🙂
